Press release: Norway unites its CCUS millieu in a new industry cluster
Norway has announced the launch of its newest national innovation cluster – CCUS Innovation – bringing together the country’s world-leading actors in carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS).
“The new cluster, CCUS Innovation, will combine two of Norway’s strongest CCUS communities into one powerful alliance – making it easier for international collaborators to access Norway’s CCUS expertise and form strategic partnerships.”
— Francesco Finotti, Manager of the new CCUS Innovation cluster
CCUS Innovation has been established through the Norwegian Innovation Clusters (NIC) programme – a government-funded initiative jointly run by Innovation Norway, SIVA, and the Research Council of Norway. The programme aims to strengthen Norwegian industry through innovation-driven collaboration, addressing challenges related to long-term growth, sustainability, and global competitiveness.
“CCUS Innovation will be a big step towards scaling up deployment-ready CCUS solutions by connecting technology developers, emitters, and investors across the full value chain.”
— Marton Vølstad, Head of Association, CCUS Norway.
Full integration of the CCUS value chain
CCUS Innovation brings together CCUS Norway (managed by Carbon Limits) and CCS Innovation (managed by SINTEF), uniting 69 members from across a diverse range of sectors – including industry, finance, technology providers, research institutes, test facilities, and legal and advisory services.
Norway has a long-standing legacy of CCUS innovation – from SINTEF’s pioneering work on CCS as a climate technology in the 1980s, to the launch of Northern Lights in 2025, the world’s first commercial CO₂ transport and storage project.
Hafslund Celsio, one of the first industrial emitters to capture and deliver CO₂ to Northern Lights, will play an active role in the new cluster – strengthening collaboration across the entire CCUS value chain.
“By joining forces under CCUS Innovation, Norway’s CCUS community will be even better positioned to accelerate deployment and create opportunities for international collaboration.”
— Jannicke Gerner Bjerkås, Chair of the Board, CCUS Norway (and Director CCS and Carbon Markets, Hafslund Celsio AS)
A platform for international collaboration
Through joint initiatives, technology matchmaking, and industrial partnerships, CCUS Innovation will act as a gateway for international engagement with Norway’s CCUS ecosystem.
The two previous clusters will cooperate under the joint initiative CCUS Innovation to serve as a one-stop contact point for industry, research, and investors seeking to collaborate with Norwegian CCUS actors – from early-stage technology development to large-scale deployment and value chain integration.
About the partners
